Abstract

The aim of the present study was to find out the common surgical coetaneous & ‎subcutaneous affections of the equine in Alexandria. All recorded cases were obtained ‎from different locations in Alex. Including Brooke hospital for animals in Alexandria & ‎some private horse farm in Alexandria. It was also conducted to review the clinical and ‎diagnostic features for such affections together with medical & surgical approaches for ‎their treatment under our local environmental condition.‎
History, thorough examination, diagnosis and available treatment were done for ‎each patient. The total number of studied animals was 503 cases, from different equine ‎species, sexes and ages. These cases include, 339 wounds, 49 Abscesses, 13 hematoma, ‎‎10 burns, 41neoplasms, 11 hernias and 40 ringworm cases. ‎
Wounds in the present study represented the major affections in equine (67.39% ‎of the total affections). It was divided into recent wounds & old wounds in deferent ‎areas in the body. Recent wounds healed by first intention and old wounds healed by ‎second intention. The horses were more susceptible to wounds than donkeys and ‎mules.‎
Abscesses were found in the body as a result of kicking from another animal or ‎bad management of biting animal & injection with infected needle. They were managed ‎routinely by evacuation and dressing. Healing was achieved by second intention within ‎‎15-30 days. Except deep abscesses apply porous tube & suturing healthy skin again ‎healing achieved after 15 day ‎
Hematoma was common in horses than donkeys and mules; surgical treatment ‎was done in all cases. ‎
Cases of burns required special care for their treatment. Burns were found to be ‎either due to improper firing or fire and chemical substance. They were common in ‎horses than donkeys and mules. The use of MEPO proved to be good for promotion of ‎wound healing.‎
Neoplasms were found in the animals were treated surgically and healing was ‎achieved as by 1St or 2Nd intention according to the type of the wound induced. ‎
Umbilical hernia was met with‏ ‏in newly born foals (2- ‎‏8‏‎ months). Most of them ‎were reducible. An overlapping mattress sutures proved to be satisfactory and ‎successful technique for closure of the hernial ring, especially by using sterile silk..‎
Lateral and ventral abdominal hernias were observed in adult animals, ‎especially horses.‎
Ringworm was recorded in equine in different degrees due to infection from another ‎animal direct in stable or using some infected instruments like brushes, Saddles, etc... ‎&responded to deferent drugs ‎
Conclusion:‎
‎1-Based on the previous findings it could be concluded that wounds and abscesses were ‎the most prevalent cutaneous and subcutaneous affections of equine 77.13%. ‎
‎2-Early diagnosis and treatment of such cases at the proper time ensured satisfied results.‎
‎3-Applying porous tube in beep abscesses after drainage & suturing healthy tissues prove ‎healthy healing. ‎
