Abstract

Summary The present study aims to determine the effects of vision impairment on the quality of life of students. Descriptive design was used in carrying out this study. The study was conducted at El-Nour Institute at Shebin ElKom. The study utilized All students enrolled in the previously mentioned institute were included in the study. They were 72 students; 42 boys and 30 girls .Their age ranged from 6 to 18 years in the three levels of education; primary education 37 students, preparatory education 16 students and secondary education 19 students. Tools of data collection:Tool 1:- Structured Interview Questionnaire The tool was developed by the researcher and it was done through the use of interview questionnaires to collect data about visually impaired students .It is divided into three parts: Part 1: Socio-demographic data of the students. Part 2: Medical and ocular history of students Part3: School supporting services. Tool 2: The National Eye Institute Visual Function Questionnaire (NEI-VFQ) – 25:- (1996)-2006 that was modified by the researcher to be used with ages between 6-20 years .It used to assess the quality of life for students who have vision impairment. It measures the influence of vision impairment on the quality of life domains.The VFQ -25 generate the following five subscales to measure student’s quality of life. 1- Physical state. 2- Mental and emotional state.3- Play and recreation. 4- Social state. 5- Degree of Satisfactions.Tool 3: Parent’s knowledge about vision impairment. A pilot study was conducted on a sample of 10 students from El.Nour institute at Shebin El-Kom and the necessary modifications were done and they were excluded in the study. The researcher interviewed all subjects using an interview questionnaire developed to illicit the needed data to fulfill the aim of the study. The main finding of the study revealed the following: More than half of students with visually impaired had moderate quality of life score. Quality of life of visually impaired students was affected by age, sex, type of vision impairment, health services, helping aids, sleeping environment. The emotional domain was the most affected one of the quality of life. More than three quarters of students had bilateral vision impairment. Approximately two thirds of visually impaired students were boys and more than three quarters of students live in rural areas away from the school. More than half of the visually impaired students prefer to stay in school hostel but they need additional services to be present at school like enough educational method, play ground, playing materials, and enough communication methods, provide healthy food and expand of hostel. More than one third of mothers of visually impaired students were less educated and approximately two third of them without occupation. more than three quarters of parents had wrong or incomplete knowledge about vision impairment Based on the findings of this study the following recommendations are suggested: • Pre-marital counseling should be held to eliminate vision impairment or other hereditary disease which hinder quality of life,especially with relative marriage • Health education for parents about the needs and problems of visually impaired students to help them for adaptation. • Support students of social, psychological and emotional needs with appropriate educational and communication skills to promote maximum quality of life. • Acceptance of visually impaired child ”as he is” from all surroundimg.• Provision of adequate health maintenance including early detection of vision impairment .Advocate for continued research, education and dissemination of information, abilities and needs about visually impairment students and other disabilities.
