Abstract In recent years studies of polymer for radiation proce¬ssing in different fields, such as industry, sterilization and medical applications have been undertaken. As a consequence, the present work films to study the effect of radiation in polyvinyl alcohol films containing specific dyes named carbol fuchsin (CF) with two concentrations and mixture of carbol fuchsin(CF) with crystal violet(CV) dyed. Thin films from polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) are prepared and are found to be useful as low-dose dosimeters at 560 nm. These flexible plastic film dosimeters are bleached when exposed to gamma rays in the dose range 10-70 Gy (accumulated dose). In the case of PYA films containing carbol fuchsin the color bleaching occurs at different concentrations at the same different doses. In the case of mixed dyes the degree of bleaching for the films containing CV+ CF is approximately the same as the films containing CF only. The addition of CV does not increase the sensitivity of the films. These films can be used as cheap, portable and reliable plastic dosimeter for dosimetry measurements. These films are useful for medical applications (radiotherapy) in particular checking the value of accumulated dose for the patient, and quality control to C060• The effects of the film thickness, absorbed dose, and post¬irradiation storage and exposure to daylight on dosimeter performance were also discussed.
