Abstract

SUMMARY Clinical decision-making is a complex process involving observation information processing, critical thinking, evaluating evidence, applying relevant knowledge, problem solving skills, and clinical judgments to select the best course of action. Clinical decision-making is an essential component of professional nursing care and nurses’ clinical performance This study was conducted in order to study factors that influencing clinical decision making and its effect on intern students’ clinical performance at Shebin El Kom University Hospital and Shebin El Kom Teaching Hospital. This was achieved through assessing the factors that are influencing clinical decision making of intern students, determines the clinical performance of intern students, and exploring the correlation between internship students’ decision making and their clinical performance The study was conducted in all internship training units (Intensive care unites which include ICU, and Critical Care Unites - Operating rooms- Premature unit - Heamodialysis unit - Emergency unit) at two hospitals Shebin El Kom University Hospital, and Shebin El Kom Teaching Hospital A total number of intern nursing students are 86 student Two different tools were used to collect the data. The questionnaire sheet was used to assess possible factors which influence intern students’ clinical decision making and determine difference degrees of influence of these factors on internship students’ decision making. Lastly, Observational checklist was used to assess clinical performance of internship students A pilot study was performed to questionnaire sheet. It was performed to test the practicability and applicability of the tools, and to detect any obstacles and /or problems that may be encountered during data collection The questionnaire sheet was distributed to intern students after a brief explanation of the purpose of the study, while observation of intern student performance was done by the researcher. Data analysis was done using the appropriate significance tests The main findings of the study revealed the following All intern students were equal in age and less than 22 years old. The highest percentage of intern students that work during academic and intern year were in intensive care units Concerning factors that influence clinical decision making of intern nurse students The majority of intern students in all clinical units agreed that The education affects their clinical decision making The clinical nursing experience affects their clinical decision making The situation affects their clinical decision making The locus of control affects their clinical decision making The relationship with instructor affects their clinical decision making.
