Abstract

The objective of this study is to construct prospectively reference charts and equations for fetal biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) in Zagazig ethnic Egyptian population using the recommended methodology, and to compare these charts with published data from other populations.
Material and Methods: This was a prospective cross-sectional study involving 650 women with singleton pregnancies and confirmed gestational age. For the purposes of this study, each woman was scanned once only, between 14 and 40 completed weeks of gestation, and the following fetal biometric measurements were recorded: biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length. For each measurement, regression models were fitted to estimate the mean and SD at each gestational age.The mean and 5th and 95th percentiles at 18th, 28th, and 36 weeks of gestation were compared with similar ranges of published data from other populations.
Results: Fetal charts and reference equations are reported in this Zagazig Egyptian population for fetal outer–inner biparietal diameter, head circumference, abdominal circumference and femur length. Equations for dating of pregnancy are presented. Comparing our data with Western population emphasizes the presence of significant variation in fetal morphometric measurements.
Conclusion: from the present work, we present new fetal measurement charts and equation for biparietal diameter (BPD), head circumference (HC), abdominal circumference (AC) and femur length (FL) unique for the Egyptian population. Also the percentiles chart provid sonographers with reference chart compatible with their practice. These 13–40-week charts are of great importance to all fetal sonographers, and, as fetal biometric values differ among ethnic groups, they are mandatory for Egyptian sonographers.
