Abstract

The infant’s tactile experiences can be uncomfortable or painful in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) Developmental stimulation programmers, as planned for preterm infants , focus on the senses, notably visual, auditory, tactile , and vestibular kinesthetic, touch isthe most important sense, which should be accommodated in the plan It is possible to provide pleasurable touch experiences through infant massage Massage is proposed as a nonmedical treatment intervention for infants in NICU When infant massage is properly applied to preterm infants, they respond with increased weight gain So, the aim of the study was to investigate the effect of tactile stimulation on weight changes in preterm neonates in NICU The study was done on a sample of convenience of 60 neonates attending the NICU of both El Manial University Hospital (Kasr El Aini) and Pediatric University Hospital (El Monira) Two data collection sheets were used to collect data for the study, a sociodemographic sheet and a baby’s response to tactile stimulation sheet were designed by the investigator Results of the study revealedthat weight gain was started ealier among the experimentalgroup than the control groupThe study recommended that the educational program should be provided to neonatal nurses and parents Massage should be applied as a routine care in NICU.
