Abstract
The feeding and dietary habits, customes as well as infections prevailing in certain community influence the nutritional status and may precipitate malnutrition. Several authors have attributed the high incidence of malnutrition among infants and preschool children to faulty beliefs and ignorance of parents. Maternal beliefs and habits regarding infant feeding are related to cultural factors which vary greatly in different cDmmunities.
The objectives of this study were to define determinants affecting infant feeding practice, assess KAP of the mothers regarding feeding of their infant and identifying some of the common malnutritional problems among the studied infants and this data could be used for future planning of national policy for B.F promotion.
The study sample included 900 pairs of mothers and their infants under two years of age divided into four groups: rural Minia (200 infants), rural Giza (250 infants), urban Minia (200 infants) and urban Giza (250 infants).
A verbal concent from the mother participating in the study was taken, the mother was assured that all data were confidential and informed about the aim of the study and the value of engaging in this study as she would know the sound method of feeding her baby and would also assured about her infant health.
