Abstract

The present study aimed at identifying the concerns and needs of adolescents as expressed by themselves and by their caring adults in Alexandria. The study was carried out in 30 clusters of Alexandria on 210 adolescents in the age group range from 15-19 years and includes 210 of their caring adults (the mother or the father or any other relative that the adolescent lives with). Two structured interview questionnaires were developed and used to collect the necessary data from the adolescents and from their caring adults. The data was collected through home visit during the period from April 2004 to June 2005.
The main results obtained from the study were as follows:-
1- Sample characteristics
A- Socio-demographic characteristics of adolescents
- The adolescents’ age ranged from fifteen to nineteen years, with a mean of 17.19 ± 1.47.
- 42.9% of adolescents were in secondary school, 16.2% of them were presently enrolled in preparatory school, while 9.5%, 13.8% were enrolled either in technical institutes or university respectively. On the other hand 1.9% of them were illiterate. While, the rest (15.7%) DROPped out from school
- More than one third of them (34.8%) represented the fourth child or more in the family, while more than one fifth (22.9%) were ranked as the first child, 23.8% were the second child and 18.6% of them were ranked as the third child.
