Abstract

Substance abuse constitutes one of the major health problems all over the world including Egypt. It is a common problem among the adolescents especially for the social acceptable drugs like cigarette, hasish and bango. It is one of the major causes of the illness and death in our country as well as the other countries both the developed and the developing countries.
Substance abuse also leads to financial burden by causing direct and indirect losses. The direct losses can be through cancer and cardiopulmonary diseases from tobacco, falls and over sedation from abuse of benzodiazepine, bacterial and viral infections associated with injection of illicit drugs and cirrhosis with vehicular crashes from alcohol. The indirect losses accompanied with sharp decline in the academic performance of the students, increase reports of truancy and expulsion from school, stealing and legal problems as a result of alteration of brain chemistry of the abusers. In our study 500 students including male and female with age ranging 19-25 years were randomly selected from different educational levels from five universities, 100 students from each university including four governmental universities [faculty of medicine, faculty of engineering, faculty of art, faculty of nursing], and one private university (faculty of media)) in the period from September 2009 until march 2011. The sample are to be subjected to self –administered questionnaire to assess their Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour towards substance abuse before an awareness lecture and then they repeat answering the questionnaire again after the lecture together with structured clinical interview for DSM-IV axis II personality disorders (SCID-IP).The results of our study are represented as follows: - The knowledge of the students of the private universities about substance abuse was better than the knowledge of the students of the governmental universities.- The students of the science section had good knowledge about substance abuse higher than the students of the art section especially the medical students because of their higher level of education and interest - The attitude of the students of the private university towards substance abuse was higher than the attitude of the students of governmental universities.- The attitude of the students of the science section towards substance abuse was higher than the attitude of those of the art section, espically the medical students. - We try to observe the behaviour of the students towards substance abuse but we failed due to the need for long time and the difficult circumstances, so the behaviour here is considered as a measure for the attitude but with different questions; we found also it was better in the private university than the governmental universities.- When we comparing between all faculties it was evident here that students of the faculty of art had the highest percentage of high behaviour (attitude) towards substance abuse than the other faculties.- It was clear by assessing the personality traits of the students that 20-25% of the students of the governmental universities and 10% of the students of the private university had no personality traits.- The number of the personality traits was higher among the students of the governmental universities than the students of the private university.
