Abstract

Road traffic accidents are a major but neglected public health challenge that requires efforts for effective and substantial prevention. Of all the systems with which people have to deal every day, road traffic systems are the most complex and the most dangerous. Worldwide, an estimated 1.2 million people are killed in road crashes each year and as many as 50 million are injured. Projections indicate that these figures will increase by about 65% over the next 20 years unless there is new commitment to prevention. Nevertheless, the tragedy behind these figures attracts less mass media attention than other less frequent types of tragedy.
Our study focused on prevention of Road Traffic Accidents and how to decrease injuries and mortalities related to them, so we mentioned the most common causes of accidents and the relation between driver, environment and the vehicle as causes of the accidents. We focused in our study on the vehicle and the recent safety measures in the new models of vehicles. We classified these safety measures into active safety measures and passive safety measures and we identified the measures involved in each group of safety measures to recognize their role and mechanism in prevention of accidents and decreasing injury and mortality.
This study was carried out on 150 persons from the emergency department of Alexandria Main University Hospital. These cases were studied from the period of August 2011, to February 2012. All of them attended to the emergency department due to Road Traffic Accidents.
The study was carried out on patients of different sex, age, work, marital status and different models of vehicles at different times of the day.
It was found that males constitute 86% of studied cases while females constitute 14% of studied cases and this was attributed to the nature of our society as males are more involved in outdoor working and driving.
The most common age group involved in this study was from 30 to 40 years old followed by the age group of 20 to 30 years old.
Most of the studied cases were of low education which reflects the importance of education in improving the countries and decreasing road traffic accidents.
It was found that passengers are more vulnerable to accidents 90.7% than pedestrians 9.3% and of these passengers drivers were the most common group to be involved in accidents 64% followed by 1st seat passengers 18% and 2nd seat passengers 8.7%.
Cars were the most common type of vehicles involved in road traffic accidents 73.3% followed by light trucks 12%, buses 8.7%, trucks 4.7% and motorcycles 1.3%.
Of these vehicles, recent vehicles constituted 81.3% and old vehicles constituted 18.7%.
