Abstract

The current investigation has been conducted to investigate the
effect of Artemisia Sp. ( wormwood ), Cleome Sp., onion seeds
( Allium cepa ) and Purtulaca oleracea L. seeds ( pusley ) on
hyperglycemic rats.
Aim of study:
The aim of this work was to study the effect of some herbs and
seeds on hyperglycemic rats.
Materials & methods:
1. Treatments:
This study used about ( 4 ) plants or herbs and seeds to treat
hyperglycemic rats as following:
1. Artemisia Sp. wormwood 5 % , 10 %.
2. Cleome Sp. 5 % , 10 %.
3. Onion seeds ( Allium cepa ) 5 % , 10 %.
4. Purtulaca oleracea ( pusley ) 5 % , 10 %.
All used herbs and seeds have been obtained from local market
and milled to give a powder and kept in plastic bags in a cool dark and
dry place until used.
Experiment animals ( rats ):
Fifty ( 50 ) Sprague Dawley male albino rats, each weighing
( 133 + 5 g ), were used in this study. Diabetes was induced in normal

healthy albino rats by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan 150 mg / kg
body weight.
All rats were fed on control diet for 15 days before the beginning
of experimental for adaptation and divided as following:
Group 1: ( – ve ) normal group:
Fed on basal diet only, as a control negative – for 28 days ( n = 5
healthy rats ).
Group 2: diabetes rats group:
Fed on basal diet after injection with alloxan as a control ( + )
group ( n = 5 rats ). All following treatment were carried out on
control ( + ) rats
Group 3: fed on wormwood 5 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 4: fed on wormwood 10 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 5: fed on cleome 5 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 6: fed on cleome 10 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 7: fed on onion seeds 5 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 8: fed on onion seeds 10 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 9: fed on pusley 5 % ( n = 5 rats )
Group 10: fed on pusley 10 % ( n = 5 rats )
Each of the above groups was kept in a single wire cage. The
diet introduced to rats in special non – scattering feeding cups to avoid

loss of food and contamination. Tap water was provided to rats by
means of glass tubes projecting through wire cages from inverted
bottles supported to one side of the cage.
Rats were weight at the beginning and at the end of the
experiment. Retro – orbital blood samples were collected. Organs (
liver, heart, kidney, spleen & lungs ) of each rats were removed rapidly
and were weight separately.
Blood samples were used for estimation of :
1. Fasting serum glucose
2. Serum GOT & GPT & ALP
3. Serum lipid profile
a. Total cholesterol
b. Triglycerides
c. HDL cholesterol
d. LDL cholesterol
e. VLDL cholesterol
4. Serum kidney function
The obtained results revealed the following:
1. Body weight gain, feed intake & FER:
1. Hyperglycemic resulted in the decrease of BWG, FER; per cent
decrease were – 65.16 , – 75.25 % respectively. Hyperglycemic
resulted in the increase of FI; per cent of increase + 28.88 %.
