Abstract

Actually considerable attention has been devoted to the study of mixed-ligands complexes of metal (II) containing nitrogen donor ligands.
An intensive number of studies on the formation of mixed ligand complexes reveal a realization of their growing importance, particularly in their role in biological process. The formation of mixed ligand chelates is a general feature of systems where a metal is present with two or more ligands. The study of these complexes shows that their formations are a favored process over that of simple complexes. The study of ternary complexes involving an aromatic amine as the primary ligand, various amino acids (AA) and biomolecules as secondary ligands can serve as useful models for gaining a better understanding of enzyme–metal ion–substrate complexes, which play an important role in metalloenzyme-catalysed biochemical reactions.
This thesis comprises the three classical chapters, introduction, experimental and results and discussion. In the first chapter literature survey on the present work was carried out. The second chapter is concerned with the preparation of the 1:1:1 complexes of Cu(II), Ni(II), Co(II), Zn(II) with nitrilotriacetic acid and alanine or phenylalanine as a second ligand in slightly acidic medium. The third chapter is result and discussion in which tools like Atomic Absorption spectroscopy, IR spectra, UV-Vis. spectra, mass spectra, Thermogravimetric analysis and potentiometric titration were used for the analysis of the eight prepared complexes. The prepared complexes are having saome common features like good solubility in water, effervescence with NaHCO3 solution, decomposition before melting.
The eight complexes decompose thermally in two overlapping steps as previously observed with nitrilotriacetic acid.
The IR spectra of the eight prepared complexes was found to contain the vibrational band around 1728-1734 cm-1 characteristic of the free carboxyl group and strong absorption at 1581-1685 cm-1 assigned to the coordinated carboxylate group.
The UV-Vis spectra of the prepared complexes show that they have octahedral structure thus the two water molecules in each complex are coordinated to the central metal ion i.e. water of coordination.
The ionization constant of the complexes as diprotic acids were determined using potentiometric titration of the complex against standard potassium hydroxide.
