Abstract

This study was applied to detect the ameliorative effect of Mushroom extracts (Agaricus fruit & stem (AW), fruit only (AF), Pleurotus fruit &stem (PW), fruit only (PF) on body weight, blood glucose level, lipid profile, liver functions, renal functions, antioxidants in the liver (Glutathione conc. and superoxide dismutase activity) and Malondialdehyde conc. in experimental induced diabetic rats by streptozotocin(STZ). The number of rats used for the experiment was 90 divided into 6 groups each 15 rats. The 1st group was considered as control normal while the other 75 rats were injected by STZ (50mg/kg B.w) to induce hyperglycemia. Rats with more than 300mg/dl blood glucose were divided into 5 equal groups. The 1st was given saline and used as control diabetic, the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th were dosed by AW (400mg/kg B.w), AF (400mg/kg B.w), PW (400mg/kg B.w) and PF (400mg/kg B.w) once daily for 8 weeks. Body weight and blood samples were collected every 2 weeks till the end of the experiment. Liver samples were collected at the end of the experiment. We found that STZ injection significantly reduce body weight, increase plasma glucose level, serum lipids, urea and creatinine levels and ALT & AST activities with decreased serum total protein level while increase MDA content with decreased GSH conc. and SOD activity in the liver. Treatment of diabetic rats by Agaricus bisporus and Pleurotus ostreatus extracts significantly reversed the effect of STZ injection.
