Abstract

The importance of this issue consequently has paved the way to searching for means to achieve it. Facility Management FM was a new discipline that fosters the concept of ”improving the quality of life within the building”.
The literature search in chapter one covered all the definitions, theories and fields of Interest of Facility Management FM and its impact on providing better life within the facility as well as its role in improving the indoor environment which -in tum-have a strong impact on occupants’ well-being.
In chapter two, the literature review emphasizes the unique characteristics of healthcare facilities. The research studies the main design features that affect the creation of a hygiene environment. It is subdivided into section (1) that studied the history of infection control in hospitals and the evolution and transformation of hospital layout. Section (2) studies the contemporary design
. issues that affect patients’ health in hospitals nowadays.
In Chapter three the literature review narrows down and focuses on facility management in hospitals. .
It introduced the domains that facility management serves and contributes to its promotion in healthcare facilities through three sections.
Section (1) thoroughly studies Hospital Acquired Infection HAl and its addition to functional disability and lead to disabling conditions that reduce the quality of life Section (2) studies the impact of hospital design on the indoor air qm thus on the incidence of infection especially via airborne route. Section (3) discusses the challenging interrelations between hospital and proper maintenance and operation procedure that also grearly infection transmission.
The three sections strongly emphasize the reciprocal relationship 1 hospital design and facility management.
In chapter five the field study basically works on analyzing the re relationship between hospitals’ design and its infection control status : to determine the existence of links between hospital design and the ir of hospital acquired infection. A list of Design Quality Indicators developed from published surveillance data. An assessment tc developed to evaluate hospital performance from infection perspective. The use of this tool was been demonstrated on one ca: hospital.
Eventually, this research is too narrowly focused on proving that 1 design of the built environment affects greatly the ability to properly it. This reciprocal relationship is the magic by which the research app the idea that the design affects the incidence of infection by either hJ or promoting pathogens proliferation and transmission.
This thesis offers one approach to better understand how design cor to infection incidence in hospitals and offers some guidance to imprc design in the future.
