Abstract

Infection is one of the major problems in the operating rooms. Many studies
showed that nurses are dangerously exposed to many hazards; such as needle stick and
sharps injuries with high incidence in the operating room due to many factors such as
lack of experience, cross infection, and work overload. They need more attention for
ensuring effective compliance with universal precautions. The aim of this study was
concerned with the impact of health education intervention on nurses’ knowledge and
practice for preventing infection in operating rooms in Zagazig university hospitals.
Setting: emergency hospital (ambulatory surgery unit), and new surgery hospital.
Study sample consists of 70 nurses, 30 nurses from the operating rooms in the
emergency hospital and 40 nurses from operating rooms in the new surgery hospital.
Research design: quasi–experimental design. Tools for the study included
questionnaire about nurses’ demographic characteristics and their knowledge about
universal precautions, and observational checklist for assessing their performance. The
study results showed statistical significant relation between nurses’ knowledge related
to infection cycle, disinfection and sterilization, universal precautions, instrument
cleaning, waste management and their personal characteristics pre post program
(p=0.000). Regarding nurses’ performance for hand washing, wearing mask, gown and
gloves most of nurses performed its items correctly pre program and improved post
program. Conclusion: from the finding of the present study and research hypothesis, it
can be concluded that nurses’ knowledge was low concerning most of the items such as
infection cycle, disinfection and sterilization pre program among both groups of nurses
(study & control) and increased post program among the intervention group. Nurses
who didn’t attend any training courses pre program were improved after the program
given to them by the researcher. The study recommended that continuous in-service
and refreshing courses should be conducted for nurses related to infection control in
operating rooms, continuous supervision and evaluation for nurses in the operating
rooms should be provided to determine any defect related to knowledge or performance.
