Abstract

Breast reconstruction is considered as part of the breast cancer treatment. The different techniques available today allow breast reconstruction whatever the local anatomical conditions
The aesthetic, physiological, and psychological sequelae can be profound. Breast reconstruction clearly has a substantial cosmetic aspect, but is fundamentally different from a cosmetic procedure alone.
The aesthetic results of breast reconstruction has improved dramatically after introduction of skin sparing mastectomy as it preserves most of the skin envelope and the inframammary fold, also it has been proven to be oncologically safe.
The patients may expect to get a good cosmetic result at least in what concerns the shape of the reconstructed breast and the symmetry with the contralateral one. This will be a great psychological support although we know that the breast reconstruction can never match perfectly with the native breast . That’s why the cosmetic aspect of the final result of the reconstruction cannot be the only criteria to choose the technique
Initially, reconstruction was entirely a delayed process, taking place sometimes many years after the mastectomy till immediate breast reconstruction has become an accepted procedure in the treatment of breast cancer.
Reconstruction involves transfer of healthy autologous tissue into the mastectomy site with subsequent sculpting of the living tissue into a breast shape, the use of prosthetic implants, or the use of both of these together.
Each option has its own advantages and disadvantages, indications and complications and the wisdom in choosing what best fits tremendously improves the outcome.
