Abstract

Egypt suffers from salinization problems in 25% of its agriculture lands. Tomato is one of the most important crops in Egypt. Specifying the biochemical indicators responsible for the salinity tolerance in tomato is a prerequisite in selection and breeding programs.
Seeds of three tomato cultivars (Edkawy, Peit086 and Super Strain B) were studied.
Salinization was accomplished using three concentrations of sterilized diluted seawater (5% EC 4.42 dSm-l, 9% EC 6.90 dSm-l, and 13% EC 9.85 dSm-I). The control pots were irrigated only with nutrient solution (EC 1.85 dSm -I). The plants were then grown for 45 days under natural climatic conditions. Growth parameters, TSS, RS, TSSg, and SOD, proline, photosynthetic pigment, MDA, H202 and soluble proteins were determined. Protein pattern and FT-IR spectra were determine for 45 days samples. Factorial ANaYA applied to all data of measured indicators. PCA and multivariate regression analysis was applied to FT-IR data and measurements indicators’ data. Results showed that the three tested cultivars were tolerant to salinity concentrations at 5 and 9% diluted seawater. PCA/FT-IR technology has a powerful means for discrimination between different treatments. Proline, SOD, K+:Na+ and Ca+:Na+ ratios may used as a selection markers in tomato breeding program.
