Abstract

Premature infant: an infants delivered before 37 wks.
Certain medical conditions during pregnancy may increase the likelihood that a women will have preterm labor, these include infection,
high blood preassure, clotting disorders, diabetes, obesity.
Infant born porn prematurely may experience signs of prematurity include, abnormal breathing patterns, problems in feeding, apnea, body temperature, blood preassure and heart rate may be difficult to regulate in premature infants.
World wide prematurity accounts for 10% or neonatal mortality.
There are number of complications that are more likely in premature then full term babies include respiratory distress syndrome,
patent ductus arteriosus, intracranial hemorrhage, retinopathy or prematurity jaundice, anemia, infection.
Lower gestational age at delivery, and lower apgar score are significantly associated with neonatal thrombocytopenia in preterm infants which lead to significant morbidity.
Thrombocytopenia is defined as aplatelet count b 150x 109/L regardless of gestational age.
Our study was done on 82 newborns from them 51 preterm which were 37 males and 14 female and 31 full term from which were 21 males and 10 females.
Umbilical cord blood samples were with drawn under sterile aseptic techniques in asterile test tube which contains EDTA.<br}All the study groups were subjected to the following.
1- Full history taking stressing on parity, gestational age, careful antenatal history.
2- Through clinical examination stressing on assessment of gestational age, anthropometenic measures, Apagar scoring,
cardiac, abdominal, neurological, respiratory system examination.
CBC was done for all cases including Hb%, RBCS, WBCS,
Differential of WBCS, platelet indices.
The result were lower platelet count in premature babies then full term babies.
There were higher MPV, PDW in premature babies than full term babies and lower PCT% in preterm than full term babies.
There was significant correlation between gestational age, weight and platelet indices (Platelet count, PDW, PCT%).
There was a significant positive correlation between Apgar score at 5 and platelet count, PCT% (P< 0.05).There were significant positive correlation between Hb% and platelet count PCT% .
from above results of the study concerning platelet indices was the importance of studying them in premature babies and recommending screening of high risk preterm for early detection and management of thrombocytopenia.
