Abstract The problem of juvenile delinquency is a growing problem world wide. It requires urgent attention as it threatens the very fabric of the society. A starting point would be to get an understanding of who those children are and the factors that turn them into juvenile delinquents. They often prey for every physical and psychosocial danger. For example, they are vulnerable to a wide range of problems such as the increased risk for many communicable diseases particularly scabies, and respiratory infections, sleeping problems as insomnia, unmet nutritional needs, under nutrition. This is in addition to the psychosocial problems such as anxiety, depression as well as feeling of hopelessness, incompetence, insecurity and low self esteem.(2, 3) Juvenile delinquents also face those problems associated with risk taking behaviors such as alcohol and substance abuse, smoking, accidents, dealing with commercial sex work, criminal behaviors and violence. However, those adolescents are not a high priority in most countries and are viewed as criminals rather than young people in need of assistance. It is obvious that not enough is being done to address the problem of juvenile delinquency which remains an ignored tragedy. Failure to identify the problem of juvenile delinquency, exploring the profile of that group, will be costly for the country because of its grave consequences. The present study aimed at identifying the health profile of juvenile delinquents resident in correctional institutions in Alexandria. The study was carried out in 6 correctional institutions in Alexandria on 110 delinquents in the age group ranged from 10-18 years. Structured interview questionnaire was developed, psychological health assessment scales were used to collect the necessary data from the juvenile delinquents. The data was collected during the period from August 2004 to January 2006. The main results obtained from the study were developed as follow. |
