Abstract

Preeclampsia, a life-threatening disease that is unique to pregnancy, has been called a disease of theories. Previous studies indicated that defective trophoblastic invasion was a leading consistent feature in PE, in which the spiral arteries retain their musculo-elastic properties and responsiveness to vasoactive substances, resulting in trophoblastic ischemia and hypoxia.
Preeclampsia is one of the major causes of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality and accounts for the majority of referrals to obstetric day care units and hospital admissions. It has been reported that the greatest impact is seen in developing countries where it accounts for 20% of the strikingly increased maternal mortality.
Early detection, prediction is aimed at detecting the early pathophysiological changes preceding the development of clinical disease. In order to achieve this objective it seems logical to search for early markers of uteroplacental maladaption that may be used for the later development of the clinical disease.
To date, there has been no widely accepted predictive test or therapeutic intervention to prevent or delay preeclampsia.
The aim of our study was to compare serum neurokinin B levels in third trimester of pregnancy in women with and without preeclampsia.
The study was composed of one hundred women who were in their third trimester of pregnancy, recruited from El Shatby Maternity University Hospital and preeclampsia unit. Cases were allocated into two study groups:
Group (1): included 70 patients with preeclampsia.
Group (2): included 30 women with uncomplicated pregnancy matched for age and gestational age. This group served as a control group.
All the cases were subjected to full obstetric assessment, and routine laboratory investigations, then blood samples were taken. Samples were aspirated on a serum separator vacutainers and allowed to clot for two hours at room temperature. Centrifugation was done for each sample for 20 minutes at approximately 1000×g and samples were stored at -20oC till time of assay. Enzyme-linked Immunosorbent (ELISA) Assay Kit For Neurokinin B (Uscn,Life Science Inc., China) was used.
