Abstract

The aim of our study was to determine the prevalence of functional bowel
disorders in patients with chronic HCY as compared with healthy individuals.
-the study was designed as a ’cross sectional study at:
* Tropical medicine outpatient clinic Minia university hospital.
* Hepatitis viruses’ outpatient clinic tropical medicine department Minia university hospital
* Hepatitis C virus treatment clinic, Suzan Mubarak health insurance hospital.
The study included 300 patients with chronic HCY and 160 healthy volunteers.
Those with the following conditions were excluded from the study:
I-patients with alarm signs (red flags): * Age> 50 years.
* Family history of colorectal carcinoma. * Presence of cachexia or loss of weight. *bleeding per rectum.
* Recent history of antibiotics * Changing symptom pattern.
2- Patients with liver cirrhosis.
3- Patients with heart diseases. 4- Patients with gall stones.
*each one ofthese patients are subjected for: -History taking.
-Clinical examination.
-Liver biopsy.
*questionnaire of Functional bowel disorders was fulfilled by every patient and control; final diagnosis of functional bowel disorders was given by the investigators with proper statistical analysis.
The results of our study showed that:
1) Functional bowel disorders are more prevalent in patients with chronic HCV (70%) than in healthy individuals.
2) Irritable bowel syndrome is the most prevalent Functional bowel disorders in both HCV patients and healthy controls.
3) Functional bowel disorders are more prevalent in females.
4) Functional bowel disorders are more frequent but with insignificant difference in patients with chronic HCV infection in rural areas than in urban areas.
4) There is insignificant relation between ALT, AST and Functional bowel disorders
5) Functional bowel disorders are more prevalent in patients with fibrosis score F2-3 more than FO-I
6) There is insignificant relation between HCV viraemia and Functional bowel disorders
