Abstract

Field experiment was carried out in the experimental farm of faculty of Agriculture, Menoufiya University, Sheaben El-Kom during 2009 growing season, to evaluate the best performance under drip irrigation system of cucumber in plastic greenhouses. Two types of emitter (pressure compensating and orifice vortex types), with two levels of discharges (4 and 8 l/h), and different methods of laying lateral line irrigation (one lateral per one plant row and one lateral per two plant rows) were used as drip irrigation under two plastic greenhouses ( opened and closed greenhouse). The measured parameters, which were affected due to the variation in the studied factors, were soil moisture and salt distributions, plant height, leaf area, crop yield, crop water use efficiency, root distributions, and some physical and mechanical properties of fruit for measuring fruit quality. The obtained results under drip irrigation system recommended that using one lateral per two plant rows in opened greenhouses, Using one lateral per one plant row in closed greenhouse, Using the treatment PS8 (pressure compensating emitter with discharge 8 lit/hr and one lateral per two plant rows), which achieved a better increasing distribution of moisture (25%) and the highest decreasing of salt accumulations (36%), Using the treatment PS8 inside opened greenhouse, which achieved a higher production, higher water use efficiency, higher length, and weight of fruits , Using the treatment OD4 (orifice emitter with discharge 4 lit/hr and one lateral per one plant row) inside the closed greenhouse in which achieved a higher production, better distribution of roots, and highest growth of vegetation.
