Abstract

This study was carried out in order to evaluate and compare clinically and radiographically the effect of management” of interproximal osseolis defects in chronic periodontitis patients with enamel matrix derivative alone or in combination with the platelettrich plasma.
The present study was conducted on a total of II normal adult patients with chronic periodontitis, contributing 14 defects.
* Group I: in which seven defects that were surgically treated by exposing the defect with full thickness mucoperiosteal flap, and the defects were filled with enamel matrix derivative.
* Group II: the seven defects were treated similarly but with the use of enamel matrix derivative in combination with platelet-rich plasma.
The two groups were evaluated and compared clinically using the following parameters: plaque index, gingival index, probing depth, and clinical attachment level. All these parameters were measured preoperatively, at 3, and at 6 months intervals.
Radiographically, bone density (in terms of gray-scale level) was assessed preoperatively, at 3, and at 6 months intervals using the image J program.
Healing was uneventful in all sites in both groups, and all patients were under antibiotics and analgesics prescription. Regarding clinical results, probing depth and clinical attaclunent loss decreased significantly throughout the whole study period. The difference between the two groups was not statistically significant at any follow-up period. Also, plaque index and gingival index decreased significantly throughout the six months, but again the difference between both groups did not showed statistical significance.
Regarding radiographic results, bone density increased significantly at six months post-surgery for both groups. However, the difference between the two groups was not statistically significant. Thus, both treatment modalities showed comparable clinical and radiographic results.
