Abstract

Ischemic heart disease (CAD) causes more deaths and disability and incurs greater economic costs than any other illness in both developed and developing country. CAD is likely to become the most common cause of death worldwide by2020. (Morrow D et al, 2005)
Even though most heart disease is manifested in adults, the disease process can begin at young age, it is therefore beneficial for the entire population, including children and adolescents, to have an awareness of the risk factors associated with heart disease and the education necessary to modify risk factors as needed on an individual basis as cardiovascular disease is primarily a life style disease.
Effective primary prevention of CAD requires early detection of risk factors.
By increasing people’s knowledge their actual risk may change and thus improve their chance to live free of CAD or have it later in life or to a lesser extent.
This study aims to assess if people in Upper Egypt are aware of the problem of CAD.
The study was carried out at Sohag, Assiut & Qena which are governorates in Upper Egypt from June 2010 to January 2011.
We had 600 participants and an interview questionnaire was designed and included demographic characteristics of the participants, awareness about CAD and attitudes towards its prevention, there was 362 males, and 238 females included in the study; the mean age of population of this study was 42.5 years (a mean ± SD 42.5 ±12.8).
In this study, (11.8%) were illiterate, (8.3%) can read and write, (6.7%) prep. school, (43.8%) secondary school and (29.3%) college.
subjects of different occupations were included, there is the traditional employers (26%), manual workers (33%), housewives (15%), and jobless (26%).
Overall (58%) of our participants have some knowledge about CAD and (42%) were completely not aware. Most of the unaware participant were females, older ages, illiterate and of low educational levels.
Among the group who are aware for CAD when we asked about risk factors we found that: The highest percentage of satisfactory knowledge were related only to smoking (96%) & HTN (80%).
