Abstract The aim of this study was to detect the prevalence of ocular diseases among school students and determining effectiveness of school student’s vision screening program in Shebin El Kom and Berket El Sabaa districts,Menoufyia Governorate .This study started from the beginning of June 2010 to the end of November 2011 , Out of the nine districts in Menoufiya governorate ,Shebin El- Kom and Berket El- Sabaa districts were chosen by simple random sample. Shebin El- Kom district contain 28 village related to it , out of these villages Kafr Tanbedy village was chosen by simple random sample . Berket El- Sabaa district contain 17 village related to it , out of these villages Shentena El-Hagar village was chosen by simple random sample . Shebin El-Kom city contains 51 basic schools, where basic schools among rural Shebin El- Kom area ( Kafr Tanbedy ) are three . Randomly 9 and 3 schools from urban and rural areas of Shebin El-Kom district ,respectively, were chosen . Also, Berket El-Sabaa city contains 19 basic school , where basic schools among rural Berket El-Sabaa ( Shentena El-Hagar ) are seven . Randomly 7 and 4 schools from urban and rural areas of Berket El-Sabaa district ,respectively, were chosen . In the two districts students of KG 1, 1st and 4th year of the primary stage and 1st year of preparatory stage were chosen to undergo the study. All students aged 4 to12 years old who are registered and agreed to be involved in the study . 67 Summary and Conclusion All studied school students (1988 students), fulfilled the questionnaire as regard socio-demographic data (age, sex, educational stage, residence) ocular examination (lid, cornea, sclera and presence or absence of squint, refraction of both eyes) presence of any general or local disease, school response to the students’ complain and the response of health insurance to the referral. One hundred and ninety one student were chosen by systemic random sample from all of the studied group and referred to outpatient clinic of ophthalmology in Minoufya University Hospital to confirm the data . As regard the demographic data of the studied group , the total number of the students examined was 1988 where the total number of the reexamined group was 191 . Among the studied group (1988), local examination revealed that only one student (0.1% ) had squint and there is no comment by the nurse on local examination items as led , cornea and sclera. Among the reexamined group whose are examined by ophthalmogist , there are two students had led problems with prevalence rate 1% and one student has corneal problems with prevalence rate 0.5% and there was no cases with squint or scleral abnormalities . On comparing screening results(1988 students) and re-examination results of systemic random sample chosen group (191students) there was non- significance difference between both groups regarding local examination (P>0.05). Among the studied group the prevalence of abnormal eye refraction 68 Summary and Conclusion (≤6/18) was 2.5% and 2.9% in left and right eyes consequently , while in both eyes it was 3.2% . And in the reexamined group the prevalence of abnormal eye refraction(≤6/18) was 1% and 1.6% in left and right eyes consequently , while in both eyes it was 1.6% . Comparison between screening results(1988 students) and reexamination results of systemic random sample chosen group (191 students) revealed non significance difference between both groups regarding eye refraction (P>0.05). As regard distribution of type of eye refraction among the reexamined group, myopia is the prevalent type of ametropia (14.6%) and anisometropia shows the rarest type (1.6%) while prevalence of hypermetropia is (3.6%) and prevalence of astigmatism is ( 7.9% ) .The prevalence of normal eye vision is (72.3%). There was no comment by the nurse on type of refraction. There was non compliance of the students and their families to the referral to the Health Insurance , as among the studied group (1988 student ) 83 student (4.2 % )were referred and only 5 students ( 6%) respond to referral . Between re-examined group(1988 student) six students (3.1 % ) were referred and only one student ( 0.5 %) responded to referral . On comparison between screening results and re-examination results of systemic random sample chosen group there was non significant difference between both groups regarding Health Insurance response (P>0.05) . |
