Abstract

One hundred samples collected from diarrheic and apparently healthy birds revealed a total of 3 bacterial isolates serologically typed as Salmonella Typhimurium. The tested isolates of Salmonella Typhimurium were sensitive to Danofloxacin but resistant to Ampicillin, Amoxicillin, Neomycin and Erythromycin. Two isolates from three were sensitive to Chloramphenicol , Colistin, Nalidixic acid, Streptomycin and Gentamicin. S. Typhimurium strain 1 was resistant to Nalidixic acid. from two healthy, adult hens; crops were removed, homogenized and prepared for Lactobacillus isolation. On MRS agar colonies were white, smooth and convex. The isolates were Gram-positive, catalase-negative, oxidase negative, non motile rods which phenotypically corresponded to the genus Lactobacillus. Two hundred day off Ross chicks were divided into 8 pens (25 birds/pen): Group 1 (G1) which contain the control negative. Group 2 (G2) contains chicks that were administered L. acidophilus only. Group 3 (G3) contains chicks that were administered S. cerevisiae (Megayeast®) only. Group 4 (G4) contains chicks that were administered E. faecium (Biosol®) only. Group 5 (G5) contains chicks that were administered L. acidophilus plus S. cerevisiae (Megayeast®). Group 6 (G6) contains chicks that were administered L. acidophilus plus E. faecium (Biosol®). Group 7 (G7) contains chicks that were administered L. acidophilus plus E. faecium (Biosol®) and S. cerevisiae (Megayeast®). Group 8 (G8) which contain the positive control. Oral challenge was performed using 0.2 ml suspension of 106 CFU Salmonella Typhimurium from 19 hours old nutrient broth culture on the third day. Results indicated that administration of L. acidophilus group plus E. faecium (Biosol®) alone or with S. cerevisiae (Megayeast®) reduced the number of dead birds to 2 with mortality rate 8%. In (G4), the shedding percent was 20, 10, 0 and 0 on the 3rd, 7th, 15th and 21stdays post infection respectively. The colonization rate was 80%, 80% and 80% in the control positive group in the ceca, liver, spleen, bile, and heart blood respectively at the 1st, 2nd and 3rd week post challenge, while in L. acidophilus group plus E. faecium (Biosol®) plus S. cerevisiae (Megayeast®) group (G7) the colonization reduced with a rate of 20%, 0% and 0% in all examined sites at 1st, 2nd and 3rd week post challenge respectively.
