Abstract

Critical care unit defined a specialized section of a hospital containing the modern equipment, highly qualified medical and nursing staff, and monitoring devices necessary to provide intensive care. When entering a critical care unit, it is obvious that seriously ill patients and their relatives are surrounded by technical tools in a high-technology environment. The development of technology in health care has led to growth of critical care facilities which have helped many individuals survive illnesses that would have killed them in the past. The use of technological devices can ensure better outcomes for patients’ health and decrease morbidity and mortality. Technology is seen as facilitating everyday practice because it makes treatment more secure and decreases workload.
The critical care nurse needs not only to be aware of what benefits the technology holds for the patient, but also what adverse effects; Proliferation of technology to critical care has increased the potential of patient injury due to physical hazards, increase in the number and complexity of equipment can easily lead to human errors. Equipment may also become a source of new problems, which sometimes are related to equipment design, reliability and malfunction; technology may dehumanize the patient care in that technology restricts the nurses’ focus on the patients’ social needs.
One important aspect of critical care nursing that needs to be addressed is the role of the nurse in attempting to minimize the unwanted influence that technology has on critically ill individuals. The critical care nurse must develop both confidence and competence in using the technology to promote the optimum balance between the benefit of the technology of the patient, minimizing the adverse effects of the technology and meeting the non-technological based needs of the patient.
Aim of the study: This study was carried out in order to assess the nurse’s perception regarding the use of technological equipment in Critical Care Units of Alexandria Main University Hospital.
