Abstract

ABSTRACT Seventeen medicinal plant (Vitis vinifera , Psidium guajava ,Glycyrrhiza glabra ,Zingiber officinale , Eucalyptus regnans , Syzygium aromaticum ,Mentha piperita ,Anethum graveolens , Elettaria cardamomum ,Lawsonia inermis, Phoenix dactylifera , Punica granatum , Artemisia vulgaris ,Allium sativum, Olea europaea, Camellia sinensis , and Asparagus officinalis) were collected from various localities. The chosen plant organ (root – steam – leaves – fruit) was subjected to washing to remove all impurities, then dried and grinded to a powder form and extracted by different solvent systems (aqueous – organic). Each extract was tested for its antimicrobial activity against test organisms (Staff.aureus , Micrococcus luteus , Bacillus subtilis , E.coli , Salmonella , Pseudomonas aeruginosa , Entercocus hirae , Candida albicans , Aspergilus niger , Sacharomyces cerevecies). The most potent was the diethyl ether extracts of clove. Purification of clove active metabolite has been carried out, and identified as eugenol, the minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) of pure eugenol recorded between 1 to 2 mg/ml against the tested microorganisms. The antiviral activity of the pure eugenol against (adenovirus type 40 - rotavirus Wa strain - COXB4 - HSV1 - HAV) was conducted and exhibited activity for virus reduction as (50% - 60% -30% -30% - 40%) respectively, by concentration of 1/10000. The antitumor activity of the pure eugenol against (breast cancer - larynx cancer - liver cancer) exhibited activity as (77% - 90% - 86%) respectively, by concentration of 25ug/ml.Studying the activity of pure eugenol against pathogenic bacterial isolates was carried out. The pure eugenol exhibited antibacterial activity between (16–28mm) inhibition zone.
