Abstract

Master of Science dissertation, Ain Shams University, 2008.
In this thesis, the feasibility of realizing a new structure for Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing CWDM multiplexers using passive optical components is presented. The study focuses on the realization of these multiplexers using passive components to benefit from their ease of fabrication, compact size and low cost.
In the first part of this work, the bandwidth of optical couplers (MMI and directional couplers) has been studied for estimating their performance over the CWDM wavelength range (1200 nm to 1600 nm). The importance of this study comes from the stringent requirements on the bandwidth imposed by CWDM systems. Also, these couplers are embedded in nearly all proposed WDM circuits which might be configured for CWDM. Numerical simulations with the Beam Propagation Method (BPM) were used to investigate the properties of these couplers.
Second, a new design is proposed for a CWDM multiplexer, based on the use of an array of coupled ring resonators. This design enjoys many advantages such as its compact size, possibility of integration and potential for extension for up to 16 channels. The proposed design is investigated for its compliance with CWDM specifications by calculations based on semi-analytical modeling. Numerical simulation using FDTD were then carried out to verify the main features of the proposed designs. A 1x8 CWDM multiplexer with a 20 nm channel spacing, 60 dB crosstalk level, and 0.75 shape factor was obtained.
