Abstract Mobile IP has been proposed to support host mobiley •the internet. Several enhancements to the basic schemes have been developed in order to provide better perfonnanee.. ’These enhancemenfB comprise route optimization that rW.uces netwOJX traffic and 8J1’IOIOtb handoff’ tbat ro:luces or eliminates the data&f:am loss during handoff. The aim of this thesis is to study the effect of these enhancements on the performance of the basic: mobile IP. A number of protocol$ that extend the basic mobile IP aod route optimization extension with smoodt handoff are diSCUS:!ll:d. A number of modificatjons in the source oode of the NS¥2 simulator bavt: been made in ordef to be compatible with ba$ic mobile IP and its enhancements. The thesilS also analyzes the effect of handoff in the mobile IP networks. where an optimized routing with :nnooth bandoff is adopted. Jt is assumed that there is a butTer in eac:h FA. Ea<;h queue is modeled according to its location and the number of received datagrams.. Simulation results iUustrate the improvement in the perforntan<::e obtained by optimizing smooth tumdoff U$lng buffering at the foreign agents (FAs). The numerical results illustrate the etrec:t of queuing delay for the handoff datagnms oo bolh the haodoff time periods Md the probability of loss wtder various conditions such as load, buffer size. beacon period. and link delay$, Both numerical and simulation results achieve a satisfactory level of through lnput. |
