Abstract

This study was conducted to study staff development of the university
teachers at faculties of nursing of Port-Said, Ain Shams and Alexandria, using
descriptive and analytic designs. The subjects of the study were all lecturers that
actually worked during the academic year 200212003. The whole number was 63: 7
in Port-said, 33 in Ain-Shams and 23 in Alexandria. Data were collected by using
three forms: the first one; UTSD questionnaire that was designed to investigate
UTSD activities in relation to exposure to stages of UTSD, degree of their adequacy
and need in adqition to selection items of university teacher and responsibility for
UTSD. The second form was staff development factors rating scale, which was used
to determine factors interfering with UTSD in addition to their degree of
interference. The third form was teaching competencies rating scale, which was used
as a self assessment tool to identify level of teaching performance of university
teachers. The main findings were: the examined lecturers showed moderate degree
of adequacy for current UTSD system at FON of Ain- Shams and Alexandria and
low for Port-Said, with statistical significant difference. There was no statistical
significant difference among the examined lecturers of the three faculties in terms of
high degree of need for more comprehensive UTSD system and the initial stage
(geared toward teaching preparation) scored the highest level. About two third
. (69.8%) of the examined lecturers stated that there was no responsibles at all for
UTSD, only 15.9% of them mentioned faculty responsibility (90% of them were in
Ain Shams). There was no statistical significant difference among the three faculties
regarding the degree of factors interfering with UTSD, and the level of teaching
performance that ranged between 53.2% to 62.8% with mean percentage of
57 .26±2.22. In addition, there was a moderate negative significant correlation
between degree of factors interfering with UTSD arid degree of adequacy and
positively weak on border line significant correlation for degree of need. There was
no significant correlation between level of teaching performance and UTSD issues.
In conclusion, there is a lack of current UTSD system, governed by Law of
Organizing Universities, there is a discouraging environment for UTSD in the three
faculties, and the good performance is the sum ofUTSD issues and evaluation.
