Abstract

2902 animals slaughtered at Assiut, Sohag and Qena Governorate abattoirs were inspected for the incidence and predilection seats of Cysticerous bovis. Slaughtered animals included 2048 cattle, 604 buffaloes and 250 calves.
Carcases were subjected to reutine and detailed postslaughter examination.
Incidence of C. bovis detected by routine and detailed post-slaughter examination were 3.27% and 2.65% in cattle and buffalo carcases respectively.
Routine inspection technique conducted by meat inspection staff of Upper Egypt abattoirs did not give satisfactory results. As a result shoulder and thigh incisions should be added to our routine inspection.
Predilection seats of C. bovis and their frequency distribution were in the following decreasing order: heart, massetor muscles, tongue and diaphragm, while shoulder and thigh muscles showed the lowest infection rate.
Cattle are the usual intermediate host while buffalo can also act as intermediate hosts.
