Abstract

The study aims to assess the effect of a designed Basic Life Suppol1 (BLS)
training program on nurses’ knowledge and skills performance at emergency room
and to assess the retention of nurses ’knowledge and pcrfonnancc at emergency
room after the Basic Life Support training program. The study was carried out on
all nurses providing direct care in the emergency rooms of all three Ministry of
Health hospitals in Port-Said their number amoWited to 36. A quasi-experimental
research design was used to conduct this study. Data were collected through a
structured questionnaire to assess nurses’ knowledge and an observational checklist
to assess the level of nurses’ performance related to BLS. It was assessed before the
training program; then asses’ knowledge and skills immediately after and 3 and 6
months post the training. TI1e results of this shldy revealed that the BLS training
program has increased nurses’ knowledge and improved their performance. It had a
positive impact, both qualitative and quantitative, on nurses ’knowledge and
performance. Moreover, it was significant decline in the mean of nurses BLS total
knowledge score after 6 months also there was a significant decline in the mean of
nurses’ performance 3 months post training program. The total BLS practice score
significantly increased in highly educated, single, younger age nurses and nurses
who had fewest years of experience. Also there was a significant coJTelation
between mean total BLS knowledge and pmctice score is so close which means if
the level of knowledge is high, also practice will be high.
