Abstract The study aims to assess the effect of a designed Basic Life Suppol1 (BLS) training program on nurses’ knowledge and skills performance at emergency room and to assess the retention of nurses ’knowledge and pcrfonnancc at emergency room after the Basic Life Support training program. The study was carried out on all nurses providing direct care in the emergency rooms of all three Ministry of Health hospitals in Port-Said their number amoWited to 36. A quasi-experimental research design was used to conduct this study. Data were collected through a structured questionnaire to assess nurses’ knowledge and an observational checklist to assess the level of nurses’ performance related to BLS. It was assessed before the training program; then asses’ knowledge and skills immediately after and 3 and 6 months post the training. TI1e results of this shldy revealed that the BLS training program has increased nurses’ knowledge and improved their performance. It had a positive impact, both qualitative and quantitative, on nurses ’knowledge and performance. Moreover, it was significant decline in the mean of nurses BLS total knowledge score after 6 months also there was a significant decline in the mean of nurses’ performance 3 months post training program. The total BLS practice score significantly increased in highly educated, single, younger age nurses and nurses who had fewest years of experience. Also there was a significant coJTelation between mean total BLS knowledge and pmctice score is so close which means if the level of knowledge is high, also practice will be high.
