Abstract

The objective of present work to investigate role of +35A/C SOD1 gene polymorphism in development of T2DM in Sinai area. Recent evidence indicates that oxidative stress may play an important role in pathogenesis of insulin resistance and β cells dysfunction. A Case control study was conducted on fifty Egyptian patients with T2DM and forty age and gender-matched control subjects in Sinai area. Genotypic and Allelic frequencies were determined by PCR-RFLP. Erythrocyte SOD activity was determined spectrophotometrically. Significant differences in allele and genotype distribution were found. Erythrocyte SOD activity was significantly decreased in diabetics compared to control subjects. This gene polymorphism is related to fasting blood glucose, insulin, glycated hemoglobin, insulin resistance and erythrocyte SOD activity. In conclusion, +35A/C polymorphism of SOD1 might be a risk factor for T2DM among Egyptians in Sinai area.
