Abstract

the study takes its point of departure from the firm belief that advertising is a manipulative inescapable discourse the main purpos of this study is demonstrating the role of transitivity in representing the various messages intended by different kinds of print ads namely consumer and public service advertisments in arabic and english discourses it also decodes cross linguistic features in an attempt to reveal cross cultural and criss genre variations the study applies the hallidayan model of transitivity to some subtypes of consumer and public service print ads in both egyption arabic and american english print press thus in an attempt to develop the study of language universal the study investigates the applicability of the above mentioned linguistic theory to arabic discourse the taxonomy of the different process types adopted in this study regards not only simple verbal groups but also complex and caustive verbal groups moreover the study tackles projection as a basic logical semantic relation between processes in clause complex delicacy is an important feature that distinguish the analysis of this study showing the basic categorizatuion of process type does not contribute effictively to revealing gener specific features and cultural variation thus when going down on the scale of delicacy it is not surprising to see that data finding become more obvious and expressive in addition to the details provided by halliday the researcher hs added some other categories to hallidy’s model such as assignment phase time inceptive and assignment phase time durative finally within the framework of transitivity system the study aims at uncovering the different approaches of egyptian and american press in dealing with the language of each subtype of the ads under study in accordance with gener specific features and culutral dimensions.
