Abstract

Today, the goal of nursing education is to prepare students for life who are capable of adapting with the rapidly changing health care environment. Students who engage in self regulated learning may be those best prepared to meet these challenges. Self regulated students are those who are metacognitively, motivationally and behaviorally active participants in their own learning process and also taking the initiation with or without the help of others, diagnosing their learning needs, formulating learning goals, identifying resources for learning, choosing and implementing learning strategies and evaluating learning outcomes. The importance of developing self regulating abilities within students has been found to be essential to successful learning and extended self directed learning into adulthood.
The portfolio possesses the characteristics of self-regulated and self directed learning, since it allows the learner to self-determine his/her learning goals, strengths and limitations, strategies, and then record them. Additionally, portfolios prompt students to look back, to digest and debrief, and to review what happened so that they can set new goals and determine next steps and the role of the teacher here is merely to assist and provide feedback. The portfolio provides the infrastructure to help the students make the transition from learning with assistance to learning without it.
