Abstract Name: Sally Sayed Garybe El Taybe Title of thesis: ”Preparation and Characterization of Functional Polyacrylonitrile for Waste water TreatmentThis article concerns the preparation of nano-poly acrylonitrile (PAN) particles by precipitation polymerization technique. Various experimental conditions affecting the polymerization process were studied. The conversion yield was found varied from 2% to 80%. The conversion yield (%) was affected significantly by initiator concentration and polymerization temperature. Furthermore, functionalization with hydro-oximic groups (HPAN) was conducted through reaction of Nitrile groups with hydroxyl amine hydrochloride. Polymers were characterized using particle size analyzer (PSA), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermo gravimetric analysis (TGA) and infrared spectrometer analysis (FTIR). The particle size of the polymer was affected by the functionalization process where increased from 130 to 210 nm. The possible use of PAN and HPAN in removal of methylene blue from aqueous solution was investigated. Studies were carried out to explore the effect of the process variables including contact time, pH, initial dye concentration and temperature on the adsorption characters for PAN and HPAN. The removal percentage varied from 100% to 60% with MB concentration ranged from 5 to 50 ppm. A significant difference was observed at 15 to 20 ppm where the removal percentage was found 70% and 90% for PAN and HPAN, respectively. No significant effect was observed of variation adsorption temperature from 30oC to 70oC or pH variation from 5 to 9.
