Abstract

a total of 34 cases of different aetiological factors were studied and divided into 2 groups (27)cases manifested clinically with seizures and (7)cases without seizures(with high risk of brain affection). They were collected from neonatal care unit of Zagazig University Hosopital.
The cases were subjected are units. to proper history taking, clinical examination ,laboratory investigation and EEG was carried out for all cases.
In our study we found that the most common cause of the neonatal seizures was hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy followed by sepsis(intracranial infections) and Intracranial haemorrage.
According to EEG changes, we found that 14 cases (66.6%) of (23 cases) with hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy(23 cases) are associated with EEG changes while the rest (9 cases 69.2%) were not associated with EEG changes. There was significant correlation between etiology of seizures and EEG changes.
There was significant correlation between neonatal seizures and serum sodium and magnesium(p<0.05).In our study we found that the seizures were commonly associated with hyponatraemia (15 cases 56%) other than hypernatraemia(2 cases 7%).
Also we observed that the seizures were commonly associated with hypomagnesaemia.
CT scanning was carried out to all cases and indicated that not all cases with neonatal seizures had abnormal CT findings.
