Abstract The developing fetus may be sensitive to the effects of chemical substances to which it is exposed in utero, from these chemical substances are widely used pesticides. Objective: We studied the embryo feto- toxic and teratogenic potential of both abamectin and deltamethrin pesticides on pregnant albino rats. Design: 32 mature healthy male and female albino rats were used for determination of the acute oral LD50 of abamectin and deltamethrin insecticides. Then 105 pregnant female albino rats (180-200 g) were used to estimate the adverse effects of both abamectin and deltamethrin (with using 1/10, 1/20 and 1/40 of the predetermined acuteoral LD50) on the developing rat fetuses during the pre-implantation,organogenesis and fetal periods. All treated and control female groups were sacrificed under gaseous anesthetic chloroform at 20th day of gestation. Both ovaries and uterine horns of each dam were exteriorized with removal of the surrounding fat and keeping of their sides. The number of corpora lutea on each ovary (group A), number of implantation and resorption sites, live and dead fetuses were counted. Live as well as dead fetuses were removed from the uterus by means of cesarean sections and blotted dry. The fetuses and placentae were weighed and examined for gross external abnormalities. One fetus and one placenta/litter were used for histopathological examination. Then one third of the remained fetuses were kept in Bouin’s fixative for at least one week, after which, fetuses were sectioned using Wilson’s free-hand razorblade sectioning technique); searching for internal visceral malformations. The other two thirds were kept in ethanol for subsequent preparation for skeletal examination. |
