Abstract Two different designs were used in carrying out this study. The first was a cross-sectional descriptive design to estimate the prevalence of low hemoglobin among parturient women. The second was a prospective follow-up controlled design to investigate the relation between low hemoglobin and maternal and neonatal out come. This•:. study was conducted in two setting; labor; delivery and postpartum units at EL-Nasr Hospital in Port Said during delivery and homes of women for follow-up. The total sample consisted of 540 laboring women.the results were revealed that 24.4% of the study sample had hemoglobin level of 10.5 g/dl or less. An association was found between low hemoglobin and women age, education, social class, numbers of parity, spacing periods, intestinal helminthes, sever nausea and vomiting, bleeding during pregnancy, antenatal visits and iron supplementation. The study results revealed that the anemia affects the course of labor, prolonged the duration of labor, and lead to postpartum hemorrhage also anemia affects the neonatal outcome where it affects the neonatal Apgar score and an anthropometric measurements. Finally, Anemia affects maternal postnatal physical and psychological status. |
