Abstract

Irritable bowel syndrome is a chronic condition characterised by abdominal pain, bowel dysfunction and abdominal bloating in the absence of any structural abnormality. IBS is a multifactorial condition, with a variety of factors contributing to expression of the disease rather than its just being due to psychopathology. These include motility, visceral sensation, central processing, genetics, dietary factors, inflammation and neurotransmitters.
Inflammatory bowel disease is an idiopathic disease, probably involving an immune reaction of the body to its own intestinal tract. The 2 major types of inflammatory bowel disease are crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. In ulcerative colitis, inflammation is superficial and continuous and limited to the colon and rectum. Crohn’s disease is a transmural inflammatory process that affects any part of the digestive tract from mouth to anus. In some patients, IBD is associated with extra-intestinal manifestations involving the liver, skin, eyes and/or joints.
Colonoscopy plays a key role in the diagnosis and management of inflammatory bowel disease. Although radiographic imaging modalities are often complementary in the diagnosis and evaluation of IBD, endoscopy is a more sensitive test for evaluating mucosal changes and is the primary method for obtaining tissue for histologic evaluation. Colonoscopy also plays an important role in managing complications of IBD, such as bleeding and strictures. Additionally, colonoscopy is currently the only method for obtaining tissue for surveillance of colorectal neoplasia in patients with IBD.
The Aim of our study was to assess the frequency of inflammatory bowel disease in clinically diagnosed irritable syndrome in Egyptian patients.
The study was conducted on 100 irritable bowel syndrome patients diagnosed on the basis of Rome III criteria for functional gastrointestinal disorders. The patients were collected from Gastroenterology and Endoscopy Units, Ain shams University Hospitals.
