Abstract

The Araliaceae family is one of the most medicinally important plant families. Chemical and pharmacological investigations have indicated that triterpenoid saponins are important bioactive components existing in plants of Araliaceae family which show various pharmacological activities. Roots and leaves of several schefflera are used as folk remedies in the southwestern part of china and in other Asian countries.
Preliminary phytochemical screemng of the powdered leaves of Schefflera actinophylla contains high concentration of carbohydrates andlor glycosides, unsaturated sterols and lor triterpens and saponins.
Extraction of the powdered leaves, then total methanolic extact was fractionated with different solvents, to afford ethyl acetate and butanol fractions. By usmg different chromatographic methods, sixteen compounds have been isolated.
Identification of the isolated compounds from Schefflera actinophylla.
Part 1: Isolated compounds of lupane-type triterpene saponins. Part 2: Isolated compounds ofursane-type triterpene saponins.
The structure elucidation of the isolated compounds was performed on the basis of various spectroscopic methods: (UV, IH-NMR, and 13C_ NMR), in addition to comparison of the physical.
