Abstract

This study aimed to investigate the reasons for extraction of permanent teeth, the most commonly extracted tooth type and the pattern of tooth loss in relation to patient’s age and gender among recipients of free dental treatment who visited OMRSU between 2006-2008. The current study is a retrospective one in which the studied cases were randomly selected from the completely informed extraction cards (the odd numbered cards from the odd numbered months were included) from the patient’s archive in OMRSU.
In the present study caries was the most common reason for tooth loss among all age groups (57.5%), followed by periodontal diseases (17.7%), pre prosthetic reasons came third with 11.5%, the combination of caries and periodontal diseases came with 8%, then eruption problems came with 3.4%, Orthodontic reasons or trauma came with 0.8% for each of them.
In the present study, the majority of patients who had undergone tooth extractions were above 41 years of age and males who had their teeth extracted were more than females. Most of the patients who extracted their teeth due to caries were young, healthy, male patients and were having fair oral hygiene. The main chief complaint for patients who extracted their teeth due to caries was pain and the most extracted teeth due to caries were posterior teeth (mainly first and second molars). Most of the patients who extracted their teeth due to periodontal diseases were old, male patients, and mostly were having poor oral hygiene. Most of the diabetic patients extracted their teeth due to periodontal diseases. The main chief complaints for patients who extracted their teeth due to periodontal diseases were looseness of teeth and the most extracted teeth due to periodontal diseases were anterior teeth (mainly incisors).
Patients who extracted their teeth due to pre prosthetic reason mostly were old, male patients and were having poor oral hygiene. The main chief complaint for patients who extracted their teeth due to pre prosthetic reasons was clearance and most of the extracted teeth were anterior teeth mainly incisors. Most of the extracted teeth due to the combination of caries and periodontal diseases were posterior teeth, mainly first and second molars and mostly lost among old aged patients. Patients who extracted their teeth due to eruption problems mostly were young, healthy, female patients and were having fair oral hygiene. Most of the extracted teeth were third molars and the main chief complaints were pain. Patients who extracted their teeth due to orthodontic reasons mostly were young and most of the extracted teeth were premolars. Also teeth extracted due to trauma were mostly lost from young age patients but most of the extracted teeth were incisors.
Most of the patients were systemically free, had single tooth extraction in the same visit and were complaining of pain which was associated mainly with teeth lost due to caries and eruption problems. Posterior teeth were the most commonly extracted teeth in our study, mainly mandibular first and second molars, while the least extracted teeth were mandibular canines. Molars were extracted mostly among young ages in contrast to canines which were mostly lost among old ages, posterior teeth were mainly lost in patients with fair oral hygiene, while anterior teeth were mostly lost in patients with poor oral hygiene.
