Abstract

a seizure is an abnormal paroxysmal discharge of cerebral neurons due to cortical hyperexcitability. Neonatal seizures are paroxysmal alteration in neurologic functions (i.e. behavioral, motor or autonomic functions). The incidence of seizures is higher in the neonatal period than in any other age groups.
Results:
(1) There was significant difference between 2 groups regarding gestational age & body weight, male sex.
(2) There was significant difference between 2 groups regarding age of onset at seizures.
(3) Apgar score at 1, 5 minutes had no significant difference between 2 groups.
4) There was no significant difference regarding maternal age between 2 groups.
(5) There was significant difference regarding number of births between 2 groups.
(6) Regarding type of seizures there was significant difference concerning subtle, clonic types.
(7) Regarding cause of seizures, there was significant difference concerning HIE, ICH, sepsis, as a cause.
(8) There was no significant difference in calcium, magnesium, blood glucose level.
(9) There was significant difference regarding HB level, platelet count, PT, PTT.
(10) There was significant difference regarding phenobarbitone.
(11) Regarding outcome there was significant difference in mortality cases between preterm, full term groups.
