Abstract This thesis studies the Egyptian construction firms systems for construction and demolition (C&D) waste and how it is important to improve the C&D waste management systems effectively to move society towards sustainability. The current status of the implemented C&D waste management systems in the Egyptian construction projects was investigated by means of two questionnaires. The results were statistically analyzed to identifY the elements that significantly influence the C&D waste management systems. The results showed that the main weaknesses are the lack of resources and lack of awareness. Therefore, the construction firms in Egypt not only need to accomplish the waste management requirements, but also need to create a waste management training in the whole organization and continuously measure and evaluate the achieved level of waste management. The conclusions from the literature and the analysis of the field survey revealed a number of points of weakness. The proposed model incorporated a number of characteristics, which strengthen the points of weakness and increase the efficiency of the Egyptian construction firms. The structure of the proposed model was built depending on two main parts: Site organization and dump site organization, that are influenced by four elements, stakeholder involvement, managerial process, environmental aspect and institutional aspect. As a recommendation, there is a need for investigating the environmental impact of C&D waste and the different elements for the cost of applying C&D waste management in the construction projects. |
