Abstract

The present study was carried out at the Children’s Hospital, Faculty of Medicine, Ain Shams University to assess the role of proton MRS of the brain in malnourished infants.
Our subjects included 16 malnourished infants (8 with edema and 8 with no edema) with ages ranged between 6-24 months with a mean age of 13  5.5 months recruited from the inpatient departments as well as 9 clinically healthy infants of the same age and sex as a control group.
All studied cases and control groups were subjected to full history taking laying stress on dietetic history, thorough clinical and anthropometric examination. Also, laboratory investigations had been done including CBC, CRP, total proteins, albumin, ALT, AST, Cr and urea. Additionally, Bayley scale of infant development was done for all cases and control groups.
Radiological study with proton MRS of the brain was done for all cases and control subjects using Multivoxel study on three brain regions (frontal lobe, basal ganglia and thalamus) bilaterally and assessment of three brain metabolites namely N-acetylaspartate, choline and creatine was done. Interpreted in the form of metabolic ratios namely (NAA/Cr), (Cho/Cr), (NAA/Cho) and (NAA/Cho+Cr).
