Abstract

Nowadays the use of piled foundations to support heavy loads has been common. Piled foundations in a lot of cases are the best solution to construct over weak soil. Piles are used to transmit axial and lateral loads from weak layers of soil to strong layers. There are many researchers int(:rested in the behavior of piled foundations. A lot of them assumed that piles could carry axial loads only. In fact, piles are subjected to axial and lateral loads at the same time, such as in off- shore structures, lock structures, bridges, tall chimneys, high¬rise buildings, earth - retaining structures and power stations.
The current research study has two folds; first is to search for the best available analytical method that simulates better field pile lateral load - displacement curves. Second is to investigate experimentally the load-deflection curves and capacity of single pile and pile group against lateral loads and under the effect of several variables; pile embedment length to diameter ratios, supporting soil relative density, number of piles in the group, pile group pattern and arrangement and finally supporting soil water content.
