Abstract

Anemia is a common condition in the older population, and the prevalence of anemia rises with advancing age.
Although it was previously believed that declines in hemoglobin levels might be a normal consequence of aging, evidence has accumulated that anemia does reflect poor health and increased vulnerability to adverse outcomes in older persons.
Anemic older adults have poorer cognitive function; greater health care utilization; and higher risk of falls, disability, and mortality than their nonanemic counterparts.
The aim of the study is to find the prevalence of anemia in community dwelling eldery. The study is cross sectional study performed on 93 participants 60 years and older selected from Meet Abad-Nabaroh-Dakahleia .
Anemia defined in our study according to WHO criteria (Hb<13 g/dl in males and <12 g/dl in females).
The study revealed that the prevalence of anemia is 15.05% in community dwelling elderly living in meet aabad nabaroh dakahlia . in males (14.5% ), in females ( 16.1% ) Also in this study we found the prevalence of anemia significantly increased with increasing age (p-value=0.04), also there is significant correlation between anemia and those who have history of blood loss(p-value=0.001) and those who use non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs (NSAID) drugs as there is highly significant correlations between intake and anemia (p-value=0.000)
The study revealed that there is statistical significance between dietary habits and anemia as there is significant correlation between meat intake and anemia while decrease intake precipitate anemia, also there is highly significant correlation between fruits and legumes, while there is no significant correlation between anemia and daily meal frequency and also tea intake\day
In this study there was no significant correlation between anemia and nutritional assessment tools done in this study (MNA,WHR, BMI) ,as regard outcome of anemia this study showed significant correlation between anemia and MMSE, IADL and Timed up and go test while there is no correlation between anemia and GDS and ADL
