Abstract We studied the prevalence of smoking habit among students, employees and workers of faculty oh Commerce, Helwan University during a period September 2009 to March 2010 with evaluation of their pattern of smoking. A random 1000students, 30 employees and 20 workers were collected and subjected to the questionnaire and data regarding smoking behavior. The results were the following: 1. The prevalence of smoking habit among students was 52%, while among employees and workers was 66%. 2. The percentage of male smokers among students was 100% higher as compared with that of female smokers (0%), while the percentage of male smokers among employees and workers was (97%) higher as compared with that of female smokers (3%) only. 3. There is an increase in smoking incidence from the 1st to the 4th year of faculty (50.4% in the 1st year increased to 63.2% in the 4th year). 4. As regards the starting age of smoking, it was found that 68.9%of smokers started smoking at the age 16 – 19 years. 5. The most favorite type of smoking was cigarette smoking, however, 11.9% of smoker students smoked Hubble Bubble beside Cigarette, and 0.4% smoked Hubble Bubble only, and 3.7% smoked Hashish and 0.4% smoked Bango. While among employees and workers the most favorite type of smoking was Cigarette smoking and 3% smoke Hubble Bubble beside cigarette and 3% smoked Hubble Bubble only, and 3 smoked Bango. Representing a new trends of smoking habit nowadays. 6. Among students, there were 47.7% mild smokers, 41.9% moderate smokers and 10% were heavy smokers. While among employees and workers there were 42.4% heavy smokers, 39.4% moderate smokers and 15.1% were mild smokers. 7. As regards respiratory symptoms between smokers: among students, there were 30.6% free, 67.1% had cough, 9.2% had chest wheezes and 11% had shortness of breathing. Among employees and workers there were 21.2% free, 75.8% suffering from cough, 36.4% suffering from chest wheezes and 36.4% suffering from shortness of breathing. 8. Questioned smokers showed a high percentage of attempts to quit smoking: 52.5%of smoker students and 85% of employees and workers. 9. There was a low percentage of ex-smokers among students (7.3%), but 41.2% among employees and workers. |
