Abstract

Tuberculosis of the ear, nose and throat has become
nowadays very rare. This is attributed to early diagnosis
and the advent of modern different antituberculous medi-
cations. The important predisposing factors are the
genetic, the environmental and the psychological factors,
as well as the influence of other diseases that lower the
body resistance such as diabetes mellitus, leukaemia and
cortisone.
Tuberculosis is almost always accompanied by general
manifestations as malaise, easy fatigue, anorexia, loss
of weight, night fever and night sweats.
Laryngeal tuberculosis is commonly limited to the
posterior commissure or to the vocal cords due to pooling
of infected sputum in this part. Change of voice, painful
dysphagia, cough and dyspnea are the main symptoms.
Tuberculosis of the pharynx and oral cavity takes
the form of painful ulcerative lesions that affect the
tonsils, the adenoids, the palate, the gingiva and the
tongue. Feeding of such a patient may be a major problem.
